class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sulphate (SO4<sup>-2<\/sup>) is the third most important component of seawater after chloride and sodium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seawater with sulphate is buried together with the sediments at the bottom of the sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sulphate is used by bacteria living in the sediments to digest the organic matter and methane gas in the absence of oxygen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We analyse sulphate onboard to have a quick or \u201creal time\u201d information about the presence of methane in the sediment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The higher the sulphate content, the lower the amount of methane possibly found in the sediment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p 787px) 100vw, 787px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le sulfate (SO4-2) est le troisi\u00e8me composant le plus important de l&rsquo;eau de mer apr\u00e8s le chlorure et le sodium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;eau de mer contenant du sulfate est enfouie avec les s\u00e9diments au fond de la mer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le sulfate est utilis\u00e9 par les bact\u00e9ries vivant dans les s\u00e9diments pour dig\u00e9rer la mati\u00e8re organique et le m\u00e9thane en l&rsquo;absence d&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nous analysons le sulfate \u00e0 bord pour avoir une information rapide ou \u00ab\u00a0en temps r\u00e9el\u00a0\u00bb sur la pr\u00e9sence de m\u00e9thane dans les s\u00e9diments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus la teneur en sulfate est \u00e9lev\u00e9e, plus la quantit\u00e9 de m\u00e9thane \u00e9ventuellement pr\u00e9sente dans les
