When traveling to the bottom of the ocean with our Pourquoi Pas? boat instruments, we find lots of tiny treasures in the sediments. They are called \u2018foraminifera\u2019 and are small animals (only one cell!) that live into shiny shell-houses which take us on a very interesting trip to the past. This is because 1) they can get preserved for millions of years (like the bones of the dynosaurious!), and 2) because they change when something in the sea varies, like temperature, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our ALBACORE cruise, these shiny shells are helping us to quickly find out when the water of the ocean was warmer or colder in the past and thus, to know how old our sediments are and how much of the history of our planet we could study in this expedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorsque nous voyageons au fond de l’oc\u00e9an avec nos instruments \u00e0 bord du Pourquoi Pas ?, nous trouvons plein de petits tr\u00e9sors dans les s\u00e9diments. Ils sont appel\u00e9s \u00ab\u00a0foraminif\u00e8res\u00a0\u00bb et sont de petits animaux (une seule cellule !) qui vivent dans des coquillages brillants et nous emm\u00e8nent dans un voyage tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant dans le pass\u00e9. En effet, ils peuvent se conserver pendant des millions d’ann\u00e9es (comme les os des dinosaures !), et parce qu’ils changent lorsque quelque chose dans la mer varie, comme la temp\u00e9rature, par exemple.<\/p>\n

Dans notre campagne oc\u00e9anographique ALBACORE, ces coquilles brillantes nous aident \u00e0 savoir rapidement quand l’eau de l’oc\u00e9an \u00e9tait plus chaude ou plus froide dans le pass\u00e9 et donc, \u00e0 conna\u00eetre l’\u00e2ge de nos s\u00e9diments et la part de l’histoire de notre plan\u00e8te que nous pourrions \u00e9tudier au cours de cette exp\u00e9dition.<\/p>\n
